In this post I would like to discuss the practical usage of the word “principal” in the context of the Constitution of the United States. One of the most pivotal words in the Constitution of the United States is the word “principal”. In fact, the word “principal” appears a total of 37 times in the Constitution of the United States. One of the first instances of the word “principal” is in the “Preamble”. “We the people of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” [Emphasis added] The word “principal” is defined as “the most important or most essential part or part of something”. The sense of “principal” in the Constitution is very similar to the word “principle”. The word “principle” is defined as “the underlying fundamental or main features of something”.
